When you save a document in Rich Text Format, it can be opened in many different programs. For example, you can open a Microsoft Word document in Microsoft Works by saving it in Rich Text Format first.
The most commonly used converters are installed with Word by default. If you want to open or save in a format that's not installed by default, you may need to install additional converters.
When you open a file from Microsoft Word, Word will automatically install the necessary converter if it recognizes the file format. If Word does not recognize the file format, you may need to install the converter for it.
Verify that the converter is not already installed...
To see a list of installed converters that you can use to save documents, click Save as on the File menu and look at the available choices in the Save as type box.
To see a list of installed converters that you can use to open documents, click Open on the File menu and look at the available choices in the Files of type box.
Run the Microsoft Office Setup program...
Quit all programs.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Microsoft Windows Control Panel.
Do one of the following:
For Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition:
If you installed your Microsoft Office program as part of Office, click Microsoft Office in the Currently installed programs box, and then click the Change button.
If you installed your Office program individually, click the name of your program in the Currently installed programs box, and then click the Change button.
On the Features to install screen in the setup program, click the expand indicator (+) next to Office Shared Features.
Click the expand indicator (+) next to Converters and Filters and then click the expand indicator (+) next to Text Converters.
Click the arrow next to your selection, and then click Run from My Computer.
