HW Error Timeout on logical device

I get this error message all the time when trying to burn DVD -R, +R but never RW. Burn starts and then after a while aborts - whether with Nero, 1ClickDVDcopy, DVDFAB&DVDShrink - doesn't matter.

    Toshiba Tecra M2. 512mb ram; 1.39 ghz; Pentium M. Burner is TEAC DV-W24EW R.0D [E] (Usb)

Is there any way to adjust a setting to fix this? Should I just junk the drive before I fill my house with coasters - 8 in the last day, trying all combinations - McAfee off, power management disabled, screensaver disabled, RAMIdle disabled, Wifi disabled - anything that might be providing an interrupt. Have tried different cabling too.

Firmware not an issue - there isn't any for this USB burner, it's chipset.

Have you defragmented your hard drive lately? That was causing a problem on one of mine a few months ago.
