    Compaq 5220 problems

    Compaq 5220 (AMD K6-2 380mhz)
    Samsung Sync Master 710s monitor
    ATI Rage Pro LT video
    Win98 preinstalled by Compaq
    Word 97 preinstalled by Compaq

New system. Getting numerous screen text problems. Little boxes [] showing up instead of text in Word 97, Windows Help screens, and other places. 6's instead of down errors on task bars. Minimize, maximize boxes are blank sometimes. Everything works, but the text is wacky. Random occurences of these problems.

Also get Explorer, Winword, Msimn, and other application errors / shutdown warnings.

Spent hours with Compaq troubleshooting but no success. Reloaded Win98, Word, downloaded latest Samsung monitor drivers. Nothing helps.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

My suggestion is to return the Compaq and buy
a better machine. Have someone that knows how
build you one. I am surrounded by Compaqs and very few work. I dont think much of thier
components that they build machines from.
If you must buy pre-built , e-machines or Hewlard Packard seem like nice choices.
Ps. add up the time you spent with Compaq support & write a mental bill with your time being worth a minimuim of $20 an hour.
I have, it wasnt a happy experience

Check the jumper settings. The mutiplier is set wrong...This will cause Strange Characters and Protection faults....Get specs for Motherboard somewhere off of this site. Good luck.

Hi Terry. You described something, happen to me a couple months ago. I think it's got something to do Fonts problem. I spend almost two days tried to re install every single softwares. And it still got the same problem. Finally I removed the display card and all the fonts ( rename fonts sub directory to something else) and reboot it re install display card again. use SP7351 softpaq. And after that get in Windows> Control panel>Fonts and reinstall fonts. Watch you have to pick one fonts at the time to see which one is corrupted. The one I had is Tahoma font is corrupted. It's really hurt when you do all of these and find out one lousy font cause problem. But I guess is in desperated time. I'm not thinking straight. But at least, user is happy and he knew it.
