What is the time frame for startup? Has the Dell Diagnostics been run on the computer. That should have come on the blue CD or it may be built in on the harddrive and can be accessed from hitting F12 on startup. Also has a spyware/virus scan been done?
http://www.bitdefender.com/ or
http://www.ewido.net/en/ are good ones

Timeframe is about 1 minute or so. this is a work computer, so I don't have the Diagnostics disc. I have run Spybot several times, and it comes up clean.......

So from the point you turn your computer on until it is at a usable state is about 1 minute? That is hardly slow. You cannot expect a laptop to boot as fast as a desktop anyway. One of the main reasons why is the slower RPM drives compared to a desktop.

Have to agree with Bob, I can't say that your startup time is excessive. If you want a really comprehensive view of what loads at startup, check out: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

Try running MSconfig from the runl line and disable all your symantec, then reboot and see how long it takes. I would suspect that is the problem.
Not much you can do about it, but at least you will know if its whats hanging the system.
Dont for get to turn it back on
