outlook express and spell check

I have a customer that has gotten a new computer running windows xp pro and outlook express. he says on his old computer ( not sure what that was or had ) he could do a spell check within outlook express and now the button is grayed out and he is unable to use it.... Have not seen the computer yet so don't know if he has an infection or anything yet.... Any ideas why he can't spell check?

I had this happen once with Groupwise and it had something to do with the dictionary database being corrupt. Not sure how outlook or outlook express access that. Maybe you can remove it and reinstall it from the windows CD.

Outlook Express requires that Word be installed for the Spell check to work.

thanks at least I know what to tell the customer when he calls back..... I thought that might be the issue but I don't use outlook and don't recommend it's use to customers.....

I assume you know that thunderbird has it's own spell check without the need for another program installed?

Yes I do. but some customers are very stuborn and won't switch.

Yeah I know what you're saying... but when my customers are faced with the choice of $90 (or whatever) for Word and a free alternative... most take less time to answer than it did to ask the question.

that may be the case here too but he still hasn't come back yet... we are in a strip mall so he just stopped by after going to another store....

Generally, I think it's pretty easy to get folks to migrate to Thunderbird. Explain that it can import your mail settings and your mail, has a terrific junk mail filter, better security, and is easy to learn. BTW...FREE!

I push Firefox/Thunderbird to all my clients, even casual ones. Sure some won't switch, but most do and are happy with the result.

Does anyone know if Open Office works as a spell check for Outlook Express?

Possibly, if it registers its spell checker with the system as available to other applications. I'd doubt it, though.
