Can't stay logged on to internet

This is my first post here. Hope someone can help.

I had to go back to a restore point on my Windows XP. Then had to download SP2 again. After I got it installed I can't stay logged onto the internet. Just did it this morning and since can only stay logged on about 5 minutes and I loose connection. Pleas Help.

I'm with wmconnect. It just since April changed to Netscape. I use Internet Explorer. This just started happening today after I finished installing SP2.

Also wanted to say I have dial up. This happened the last time I had to install SP2 and someone told me about a setting to go to, but my memory is not what it use to be.

When it logs off it tells me to check my settings.

    Try this:

    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Obviously, you may have to download it from another machine. I'd also suggest running a thorough anti-virus scan for good measure...
    Welcome to WD.

I don't know what you mean by "down loading it from another machine." I was an automatic update from the microsoft website. My computer is set for automatic updates.

Was reffering to this...figured your connection was limited.
"Updates" won't always fix problems...trust me.
Were you able to run the winsock fix I linked you to??

    Hi McFay and welcome....

Do you use Outlook Express? If so, the default (after windows install) is to "disconnect after sending and receiving".

To turn this off, open Oulook Express, go to tools\options\connections and uncheck the relevant box.

Outlook Express routinely checks for new mail every 5 minutes or so and if this box is checked then it will disconnect you from the web after doing so.

Worth checking before going in to the "complicated" stuff!!

    Good luck

    John

I don't use outlook express for my mail. But I went there like you said and the box was not checked.

I went to another restore point and restored again, hopefully that will fix my problem.

Since I went to another restore point, I'm been logged on now about 30 minutes. I believe that fixed it. I have AVG and it runs automatically every morning.

    Thanks everyone for the help.
