Sounds like the system could use a restore. If you have a CD burner or something I would back up you Data and perform a system restore. Depending on the age of your system you may have restore CDs or the system restore could be built into the computer.

Would it be possible to post your Dell Service tag here so we could know a little more about your system. Then we can link to Dell Support pages that will tell you how to restore your computer. Be sure you back up your data first.

    Welcome to Windrivers sweetpea

this might be the cause but without further information it is difficult to tell.

The operating system is XP? What service pack level? Are you logged on as Administrator when you try this? Have you tried installing a newer version of Windows installer? Have you checked for spyware and viruses?

I have checked for spyware and viruses I have Ad-Ware SE and System Mechanic 6 and Reg Cure. I even restored it and after that unstalled the windows home xp and then reinstalled the windows. I have a Dell Dimension 2350 series and it's on the service pack 1. Can't upgrade to service pack 2 the computer is 4 years old. When I called Dell said I could have missing files?

Are you saying since the computer is 4 years old you cannot upgrade to Service pack 2. Or are you saying you are having trouble upgrading to service pack 2 and the computer is 4 years old.

You said you 'unstalled' the OS and re-installed it.

    From cd ?

    Did you follow precise guidelines:

CCT it's a dell, it will have restore CDs

Sweetpea, you could try chkdsk /r from the command prompt or sfc /scannow - these should replace the files but I think you should try a repair install with the windows cd supplied by Dell. Boot from CD and let setup run, ignore the first repair option, let setup continue. When it gets to the screen where it asks which partition to put the installation on, choose repair. This will replace ALL the system files, but leave the data alone. Your programs (if they are not badly corrupted) will not need to be reinstalled.

You should then immediately go to Windows update and install Service Pack 2. This will clear the problem.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

    resolved using this Windows helper:

And NooNoo, I was simply trying to understand what 'unstall' meant.

Hi Guy's Today I reinstalled the windows xp from the CD. I have the windows media player back and the installer is started. This is the problem today I tryed to reinstall adobe reader it said Error 1723 a DLL required for install to complete could not run. So I tryed to install windows installer 3.1 and it stopped my service for the installer 3.0 and then a KB893803v2 Setup Error access is denied. So then i system restore it back to before I installed the 3.1.
