I'll check with HP, but ive just scanned a photo to a Sony Memorystick on the office Epson RX620. Very easy to do. Took 2 button presses for a quick scan, and there were options such as autocrop, scan type (photo/text) etc etc.

Wooot. Even better. I plugged my Kingston USB drive into the front port on the RX620. It recognized it as a memory card, and then I was able to scan to it.
You live and learn!

OK, so now you have a work around... problem - how do you get it off the mem stick across the network... can the stick be browsed from the network?

I'd wondered that myself. Another one for HP tomorrow, but....
Not an issue in this particular case though. His ASUS laptop which we are providing has a Sony MS slot. His camera is Sony. Theres only the one laptop connecting.

I've just installed a HP C6180 for the customer.
Easy to set up.
Easy to wirelessly network.
And best of all - it scans wirelessly too.
Its a wonderful unit, and im about to order a pallet full.
