Fragmented files

hello, I have a Athlon 1000mhz system running XP, I ran the defrag program and got the results several files (10) are fragmented which defrag could not defragment. I Then ran CHKDSK at the command prompt and it came back with
" there is a problem with the file system, run CHKDSK /F,to fix the problem. I typed in CHKDSK /F and it came back with CHKDSK can not run because the volume is in use by another process,would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system starts (Y/N) , I type in Y, restart the system and the CHKDSK process works, but without doing the /F parameter and identifies that there is a problem in the file system. How do I get chkdsk to complete the /F parameter to fix these fragmented files???
I have a 120GB HD with 88% free.

the sytem uses NTSF file system

most of these files are in the Temporary Internet Files\Contents.IE5, and all have the suffix .xml and vary in size from 1 to 14K and one, the Windows update log is 1MB.

Hi!

Generally, chkdsk after reboot run with /F option.

Schedule another chkdsk /F and verify that chkdsk is making 5 steps of operations. Normal chkdsk without /f option does 3 steps.

Start in command mode and type the command, the drives are not locked at this stage so a full check can be made.

how do you start in command mode?? the only way I get the command promt
is to go to accessories and then command prompt.

I went to the website, and used the info to defrag my disc, after the defrag, still had some files that could not be defragged, how can I fix these files??

As to chkdsk, from within Windows go to Start > Run type cmd hit enter.
Type chkdsk /f hit enter again.

Command mode involves restarting the machine, taping the F8 key and choosing Command prompt from the options...or I believe that's what gemstone meant.

Click on start, run, enter 'cmd' (no quotes), enter 'defrag c: -a' to get a report (not a defrag just a report).

You normally must have 15% free disk space to defrag - the -f switch is to force defrag with less than 15% free disk space.

That's all I know at this point!

edit: the chkdsk function doesn't run from windows when you're operating it because it cannot gain exclusive access to the system (a 'lock') - thus, it says it will do the chkdsk on the next boot.

You can use a boot disk to get to the command prompt and then should be able to enter 'chkdsk /f' there.

Yes, if these are in the Temporary Internet Files folder, they could be deleted.

Do you delete your Cookies and Temporary Internet Files regularly?

(I have a problem with Defrag too, but in this case, it doesn't tell me which files are fragmented. Had the same problem with my old computer, only thing that solved it was a complete reinstall, which I'll do next March anyway, does it good !)
