    Question Help Please!!!!

I have a Nec DVD_rw 1300A external Dvd Burner that has quit working. Anytime I put a blank DVD in the burner it flips out and says it a cd drive and wont recognize the media. It recognizes dvd movies fine but not blank dvds. A friend recently bought a brand new comp. a pretty cool dual drive, I set up windows on it then out of curiosity I stuck a blank dvd into his brand new internal burner and it did the same thing, said it was a cd drive. I heard that it could possibly be a problem with xp sp2 so I uninstalled my SP2 and tried again. Same thing. I read around on forums and read to try nero infotool and make sure that the aspi was installed. My system aspi was not but the nero aspi was so I found the aspi installed it and tried again and still same issue. At least nero now sees sytem aspi and lists them.

Someone please help Im frazzling my brain trying to fix this.

This procedure may not work in all cases but it's worth checking out.

I read that DVD recordables are not natively supported by w32 OS's , that's the reason ( an exception for dvd ram ).

A properly installed burner software package will see it and use it.

What burning software are you using? (include the version number please)
    Reinstall SP2, you need it.

Im using Nero 7, Dvd Xcopy platinum, DvD Decrypter and dvd shrink 4. something. Mainly Dvd Xcopy Platinum. I worked fine for awile but doesnt now. And plus the new system is not recognizing the blank media. I did reinstall sp2 right after I found out that did nothing too. When I go into the properties of the dvd drive the recording tab is clicked, but the type says its a cd drive.

OK, open Nero 7, set it to dvd, then put in a blank dvd, now click on disk information (this is not the nero info tool). It is the icon of a disc with an i on it. It will tell you what type of disk it thinks has been inserted.

Does the unit burn cds ok? Do you have a different make of DVD blank to try?
What blank media are you using? Have you ever flashed the firmware?

Flashing the firmware can be done on any drive... but it can be dangerours.

Drive speed? I didn't ask for that... I asked you to open nero normally for a data dvd creation

OK so if Nero disk info says you have a dvd-r inserted, then you have. What are you trying to burn?... what do you mean by "flips out" ?

To help you we need exact error messages and accurate descriptions of the problem.

ok, so is Nero open when you put the DVD in?

In my computer, right click on the DVD/CD drive, select properties, click on the recording tab... is the enable burning on this drive checked? If so, uncheck it and reboot.

still nothing is not a description.

Please describe exactly what happens when you open Nero and then insert a blank dvd.
