    combo drive burning problems

    Gateway M520
    Slimtype (Lite-on) COMBO LSC-24082K CDRW/DVD

First off I would like to thank everyone for having me on this site and any input you may offer. I will try to keep this as brief as possible. Original hard drive went bad, replaced with brand new one and installed everything from scratch...now my combo drive won't burn correctly. Here's what I have tried so far and the outcome (if applicable). Currently the drive is in My Computer and device manager with no problems and I can access the recording tab.

-Tryed 7 different burning programs including WMP (and both disk types for each)...I did the software one at a time and uninstalled each before trying the next to prevent conflicts; no burn
-Tryed 8 Imitation Cds; get "write protected" or "unknown" errors
-Tryed 2 Office Depot Cds; computer froze or gave "unknown" errors (except one time I burned 118 MP3s to 99% and it froze...but I rebooted and the files were written, however, only 15 of them work in my MP3 player)
-Tryed every write speed and cleaned discs
-Uninstalled, Re-installed, and updated all drivers, CDROM drives, and IDE Controllers from device manager
-Disabled Windows Native writing under recording tab (except when using WMP or course)
-Saved ISO image and tryed to burn with that...nothing...
-Tried Erase and Full format on BOTH disc types, same errors
-Checked Registry to ensure drivetype value is at "2" for writing
-Ensured that DMA modes are active on both IDE channels
    -Upgraded to Windows SP2
    -Updated ASPI Layer
-Updated Firmware to JK0N and flashed drive w flashfix
-Did system restore even though I JUST installed everything a week ago...no change

What am I missing? It worked with my old hard drive using Nero and the "write protected" imitation disks...but that was a preloaded software title that didn't include a disk :-(

Two thoughts..try turning off dma on the channel with the burner, and the second is..whatever caused the hard drive to go bad may have affected your burner as well

Thing is, it does burn with the bad drive still, just not with my new one. The bad drive will still run for like 25 minutes or so just very slow wit a lot of weird errors...but it will burn...ill try the PIO mode and let you know..

Ok tried PIO mode with Nero and WMP nothing still...not sure if I sould buy a new burner since I would be risking the possibility of it not working as well...and i don't know anyone with an external cd burner i could test

Did you replace the IDE cable?
