Next Challange - POP3
This is more for my own knowledge than anything I'm working on.
I know you can setup SMTP with IIS, but what about POP3? I'd like to have some sort of Intranet E-mail capability, but I really don't know how to set this up without using a Unix type server.
Anyone know of a good resourse, or tutorial?
(maybe a new fourm catagory for tutorials?)

"POP3 is integrated into the Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store at a level similar to MAPI. The functionality of POP3 is not provided by a separate Microsoft Windows NT service, as the name might suggest. Instead, it is integrated into the Information Store Service. Being integrated into the Information Store allows for the fastest, easiest access to data while still providing a secure environment."
from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/exc...50/05_pop3.asp
Something else to bear in mind is that ALL of the microsoft press books relating to NT4 are either in bargain bins or going to be pulped. I picked up the SMS training kit for about £12 sterling last week.
From Microsoft exchange server training book:
"POP/IMAP client support is enabled by default.
Objects are : POP3(Mail) Site Default at site level and POP3(Mail) settings at server level. A protocols property page is implimented for every mailbox object. SMTP is required to send, so config of IMS may be required."
To get to them go thru Microsoft exchange administrator ->select and expand the configuration pane for your site, select protocols. double click POP3(Mail) site default properties. verify that Enable Protocol is checked.
There's about a page and a half more dealing with site + server protocols, user authentication and closing idle connections. Like most microsoft products, the interface should allow you to play with most things without taking your hand off the mouse too often.
What does this button do?

Since this is for learning, I'm not about to shell out the money for Exchange Server.
Is there a trial/free download?
Or should I find a 3rd party software?

The microsoft training kit for exchange includes a 120 day time limited demo of exchange.
Most microsoft training packs come with 120 day trial versions. The SMS training kit comes with SMS, SQL 7 + NT4 server demos.

Track down a copy of EMWACS. It is about 800 k; basically 3 services and your done. Read the documentation that comes with it to set is up (it is dead easy as long as you read the instructions). It just uses the NT accounts on the server to authenticate. Download it from here and give her a whirl. Let me know if you need any help.

Decided to go with Mucur Email server - easy to setup, and not over priced at $213 for 10 users / $640 for unlimited, and I've already sold it to the customer I was setting up ftp for.
