    Exclamation XP installation failure

    XP boot-up installation on an:
AMD XP 1300, 128 RAM, generic CD-rom, HP monitor, PS2 mouse and keyboard, western digital hard drive 60 gb-
While doing its initial setup stuff, it halts here:
    File sparrow.sys has caused an unexpected error (4096) at line 3529 . . .
It requires a restart and will not install. Microsoft will not help, no one seems to be able to find that file on the cdrom, PLEASE, for the Love of God, someone please help! This has cost me five hours of time, including time alone with my son.
    Thanks.

First of all which motherboard? Have you recently updated the bios?

Try the tried and trusted, remove ALL pci cards and disable ALL on board devices (except video if it is onboard)

It also could be your cdrom drive is not functioning correctly - skipping or the cdrom itself is dirty.

Sparrow.sys is part of a scsi adapter setup, do you have a scanner attached to its own card? Sparrow.sys in adaptec drivers

I'm getting an error during my XP installation from a partitioned system running ME. The error says "File sparrow.sys caused an unexpected error (4096) at line 3540 in D:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup.c.

It happens when it says "Adaptec AHA-154x/AHA-164x SCSI Host Adapter" in the comand bar at the bottom.

Please help I've been working on it for days. I see the post above but I don't know how to remove the PCI cards or disable the all devices. Please explain futher. Thanks

No I do not have Norton Go Back.

    It's a Dell Dimension 4100.

    Cd

You might also try changing the CD drive. I find many times XP will not load on an older stock CD drive BUT if I replace it temp. with a brandy new one it loads fine. The I reconnect the internal drive and go about my business.
