    ipconfig ok cannot ping

I am using win xp with sp2 on an amd 1.3 ghz processor.
Computer could not connect to the internet after installing zonealarm, I set permissions properly, but no go..so went to add / remove programs and uninstalled zone alarm then restarted the computer several times..still would not go. Uninstalled sp2 and still no go. Eventually had to reinstall the operating system and put back in sp2 and still cannot connect with wired or wireless routers...everything else works fine. Can get the ip address of the network card and the router.with ipconfig, but cannot ping the router.
When I connect a laptop to the same cable I have a perfect connection.
There are no firewalls on and I have minimum startups in the background.
I did notice in device manager that there are 3 other network cards listed that I cannot uninstall...so I disabled them !

i don't know if zone alarm changed it's install/uninstall process, but there was an issue if you removed zone alarm through add/remove programs, the true vector engine (the actual firewall) still ran. the solution was to re-install zone alarm and use the zone alarm un-installer to remove all components.

You may need to boot into safemode with networking to get on the net to download the necessairy items

    wish I could

I cannot get into safe mode with networking on the xp computer.
I am currently on with this win 98 computer.
I reinstalled zone alarm but it would not work and gave an error message. There was no uninstall in Zone Alarm so I went to add remove programs and their web site where messages indicated that i should delete vsmon.exe, remove prefetch files...I deleted my temporary files, also deleted all references to vsmon and zone labs and zone alarm in regedit. Still cannot get onto the internet after restarts I can ipconfig with no problem can ping my system and network card. But cannot ping the router. Thanks for the great idea.

In xp, click start, run, type services.msc. Scroll down to the zone alarm service running. Double click on it, and disable the service. Reboot.....It's all good now.

I checked that and it was not one of the services running. But I did disable the windows firewall. Still no luck. I installed xp on my other disk on this computer and can still run the other xp but no internet connections. I will run system file checker and see if that helps.

If there is only one network card in the computer and device manager found 3 and you disabled two, it would appear one of the ones you disabled is the actual card.
I would almost remove the card restart the computer and then check and make sure all are gone from device manager shut down reinstall the card and see if windows loads only one this time.

    Linksys enabled

Actually there are three network cards that did not appear before my re-installs 3com, Realtek and TEG. My Linksys is the one that is working but cannot get to the internet and it is enabled. I will try whatsrunning as I read about it, downloaded it and it is the best diagnostic that I have ever seen. It should show me what is running on the other driveand blocking my ports...and perhaps loading the other network drivers. Ran system file checker and there were no problelms at all. Thanks for your reply.

    Talking Fixed the Problem

I tried "whatsrunning" and found a system file that was in use called VSDATANT that was attributed to truevector which is Zone Alarms firewall. I could not remove it as it was being used. I rebooted back into my other XP removed the system file in the now unused drive. Booted back into the drive that had the problem and then lo and behold my internet connection is up and running like a bat out of hell.
There was no indication of what was running using the available windows resources, I would still be looking were it not for this program. Thank you for everyones help.
