    winxp and 640x480 resolution settings

This may be a bit strange but I want to get xp to display in 640x480 mode. What we have is a windows xp home machine with a dual output video card ( radion x300 ). What we are trying to do is run a program that allows you to display on a monitor and send a seperate signal to a projector on the other video port. When first hooked up it defaulted to 640x480 on the projector.... however the operator switched it to 800x600 and that worked to some degree but not completely.... now the option to switch back to 640x480 is no longer an option. What has been done is the "generic tv" that the projector was called/installed as was removed and it still will not go back and give the lower resolutions. The video driver is the latest from ati/amd but does not include the catalyst driver as that gave errors on startup when loaded... I believe the version of directx in use is 8.1. The other problem is this is long distance support.... I do not have direct access to the machine.... any and all ideas welcome...

The only time I've been able to get winxp into 640x480 mode is when the video card drivers are not installed and XP doesn't have one. Maybe remove all the drivers? but if XP has a basic one this probably won't work.
I had some other issues with previous versions of windows and setting the monitor driver to a specific resolution solved "similar" situations. So set it to a Super VGA 640x480 monitor or something...

thanks for the input.... I thought of trying compatibility mode but the problem with that is we only want the one output to be 640x480 the one to the monitor he wants normal.... Like I said this is a long distance support so it might be awhile before I can get back to you on any results...

The error you got with the catalyst control centre on boot was likely because you have not installed .net 2.0.
Now that being said the catalyst control centre installs an icon in the tray which allows you to right click then choose the video card (x300) and then set the display. I see 640X480 and i see below that 640X432

You can also try this: go to Display Setting and click Advanced, then the Adapter tab and select "List all Modes"

You're welcome. I got that tip from a college class I took where we had to hook a computer to a very old projector. Before that, I just assumed XP had no support for 640x480.
