Instructions - Installing Windows NT on a Large IDE Drive
Hi ..
this for all the people who try to install WinNT 4 ona large IDE drive..
you will encounter 2 things -
1. setup reports the size of your HDD wrong
2. ssetup will crash - you cannot install
I'll ignore 1 - after WInNT is installed and you run Sp6a your HDD will report at the right size..
as for 2 -
you can follow microsoft Instructions - they work about 80% of the time :
http://support.microsoft.com/support...SRCH&SPR=NTW40
For those who want MY way of doing it - here goes:
1. Get a Floppy with DOs 6.22 and FDISK and format http://www.bootdisk.com
2. Fdisk and Format one Primary Active Partition 2GB FAT16
3. Copy the i386 directory to the HDD.
(smartdrv will speed things up)
4. boot from a floppy (with smartdrv)
run winnt /b from i386
5. after the installtion is done install service Pack 6a
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nt...SP6/allSP6.asp
6. after service Pack is installed convert c: to ntfs
from cmd (command prompt)
type
convert c: /fs:ntfs
7. get a flopy with Ghost and use Partition to IMAGE (you can either do it straight to CD-R or to another HDD)

comment:
Now you have an Image of Working NT 4 for any occasion <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> (all you need is a program called Newsid http://www.sysinternals.com and to change the PID and User in the registry - no more installs - NT IS NOT PnP !!)
This will not work on SCSI drives - but the problwm is only on IDE..

8. reboot with the Ghost floppy - this time select local -> Disk from Image and reimage the HDD from the image you created (you can now specify the size you want..)
Enjoy ..
