    samsung dvd-rom sd-608 gone

I hope someone out there can help me out with this one. I have the above dvd-rom drive. When I try to use it, the light just blinks then goes out and nothing. It shows up in my bios just fine, but it isn't in device manager nor in my computer. I double checked my cables and power to it and they are fine. I have window xp home with service pack 2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Windrivers rayrayguy

If it shows up properly in the bios, it should show up in device manager - possibly with an error. Do you have any unknown devices showing in device manager?

Have you looked in disk management? (right click my computer, manage)

    Thank you..

I have not noticed any unknown devices when I checked. I will double check that as well as looking in disk management.

I just looked in both places and the sd-608 isn't listed in there at all. And no unknown devices either.

I look in manage and used by connection and it listed 3 other devices under this (dvd burner, and 2 other hard drives) : nvidia nforce3 250 parallel ata controller (v2.6) : but not my dvd-rom.

OK, go back to the bios and post exactly what your bios says about your dvd-rom.

Is it on the primary ide or secondary - as slave or master?

Have you tried disconnecting the dvd rom, booting the pc, then shutting down and reconnecting and then have bios autodetect it?

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting and didn't work either. My bios noticed when it was disconnected and it auto recognized it when it was reconnected also. It is my secondary IDE slave drive.

This is what it says about my drive in the bios:

    Device: Atapi cd-rom
    Vendor: Samsung DVD-ROM SD-608
    LBA mode: Supported
    PIO mode: 4
    Asynce DMA: Multiword DMA-2
    Ultra DMA: Not Supported

    Type
    PIO mode:auto
    DMA mode : Auto

Thanks for sticking with my problem for a little while longer...:-)

P.S. Could it be a problem with my IDE cable? Should I try a diff one to see if that is it?

Do you mean it didn't matter if your dvdrom was connected or disconnected, the bios still showed it? If so, you need to set nvram or escd to enable when you remove the drive to force the bios to update.. and same again when you reconnect it.

As for the cable, yes, it can make a big difference. You need a standard 40 wire cable for that I think.

Sorry for being vague. I meant when I removed the drive, it wasn't in the bios. When I connected it again, it showed up there automatically. I'll try changing the cable to see what that does for me...thanks.

Is the DVD rom connected as primary or secondary, master or slave? What position is the jumper in?
