PDC or Stand alone

Hey all,

Hope there is a simple answer and explanation to my question!

Here goes:

I have two workstations and I am setting up an NT server. Should the server be set up as "PDC" or "Stand alone"?

It will be the only server with very little chance of growing beyond that, except for the addition of a workstation or two in the future. There will be no need for additional server types (i.e. - print, web, etc.).

If there is a choice, (and a recommendation) plz list some of the pros and cons.

PDC all the way baby!

The learning experience will be worth it. You can have your other PC authenticate to it, create additonal users and groups, add DHCP...the list is endless.

Don't sell youself short.

I had hoped that there would be more response and discussion about this but ... ah well! The point becomes moot today as I am configuring as I type. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

I agree with installing a PDC. Lot more option for future growth. Standalone servers dont have much scope for growth once you have setup it up.
At least with a PDC you have always the option to add DHCP, WINS, BDC etc etc etc

The PDC will be a good learning tool for you also! It will allow you more growth for your network since NT Workstations can only peer-to-peer up to 10 if my memory serves me right, and the stand alone server is just that - stand alone.

If you are feeling daring, you could also set up a BDC, too.

I agree with the other posts - go for a PDC to start with.

Future expansion, not *if* but *when* it comes, will be possible because you will already have a foundation to build on.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a standalone can initiate domain authentification (no domain controller) and assign user profiles to logins.
