does anyone know.........?
I think that related to the excel error at startup I posted about a few weeks ago (something which is still ongoing), i quickly loaded up task manager just now (on loading the W2K desktop) and saw WINWORD & POWERPOINT appear in the running processes for a second or two and then disappear. I can only assume that when EXCEL does this, it crashes out and gives the error.
The thing that i dont get is i am not loading anything to do with office at startup - i have taken all non-important items from startup using the startup inspector.
This is also accompanied by SpyBot (which also came up with stuff that i have removed). I now have it resident, looking after unauthorised changes to the registry.
can anyone tell me what is going on? I dont get the error with exel if i quickly load it at startup OR anytime again after startup (only on first boot).
my system is w2k with sp4 regularly updated from windows update. i HAVE tried a repair option with office and this made no diff.
Mr Miyagi, by any other name... (is this sig short enough?)

Which version Office? Have you checked the start, programs>startup menu as well? Get a copy of msconfig.exe from an xp machine and load it on 2k, what are the start ups happening?

office is 2000 premium., word, exel, powerpoint, publisher etc.
startup is as follows (from startup inspector):
cloudmark = outlook express spam thing
winkey = hotkeys definition
soundman = sound manager
loadqm = ?
tweakui = tweak
nvcpldaemon = ?
avg7 = avg virus checker
intellipoint = mouse thing
opware12 = omnipage pro
spybot teatimer = spybot thing
i already have msconfig and there's nothing much different in it to that above.
in start>programs>startup are:
winkey
cloudmark

loadqm
nvcpldaemon is part of the nvidia driver software
erase office then reinstall after a reboot. Then immediately update via office update... the repair option is not cutting it.

You can try, but it would be helpful to have a few more details on the problem with excel.

what i have been doing the last few start ups is to load TASK MANAGER and wait for the EXCEL thing to load and then click "end task".. i have not had a crash message since doing this.
I will eventually get around to uninstalling and reinstalling.... and will let you know the result.
