Windows update not working, cannot install SP2
Hello all,
Replaced a motherboard in an EMachines PC. Motherboard NOT the same as original. So naturally Windows XP Home would not boot (was in rebooting loop). So I ran a Windows XP repair.
Now Windows almost runs fine. Windows updates (V6) from the web site do not work. I get this error code: 0x80070005
SP2 will not install. It gets all the way to Finishing installation - performing cleanup then I get this error message:
Error sig: update.exe Appver 5.5.1005.0 modname: ntdll.dll blah blah
I am unable to start the automatic updates service. It tells me: error 5: access is denied.
I have tried all the above with the original user account, and with a new one that I created, and in safe mode. No change....
Any ideas?
AW

Hi there Jak
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148
You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917499
This may help to to diagnose windows update issues..

OK, I got SP2 installed finally - I ran a repair with a SP2 CD.
That worked fine. However, I still cannot get ANY windows updates to install. It downloads them fine, but fails on installation.
What can I do about that?

Go to windows update site and view the install history - if you click on the red errors it will give you the full error code.
Is it the same for all errors?
I have had similar problems with over zealous registry blocking/script blocking/firewall software.
Is this wired or wireless?

This is wired. When I go the history page, only one update show up, and that is the Windows installer 3.1 , which installed correctly. None of the 78 failed updates show up.

I know you probably did this but doesn't Windows need to be Authenticated then downloads work?

Yes CCT, alot of the downloads won't work unless you do the genuine advantage update.
Jakkwb, find the download folder where the windows updates are and delete them, go to windows update and use the custom route and uncheck everything except the genuine advantage.
Have you activated windows?

yes, I activated it after the install. The genuine advantage download is not in the list of updates. Should I retry it?

OK. I downloaded and installed it from your link. It went fine. Windows updates still fail.
Please help,

what is the error code for the failure?

There is no error code at all. It just lists (in the pop-up box) that all the updates failed. No explanation...
