NT Server takes to long to look at NTWS

When our NT4 Server takes a look at my design machine (NT4-WS), it sometimes can take a long period of time to display the documents directory.

Would the plethora of sub-dirs slow this operation down???

Short answer :Yes.
Move any of the directories / files that are not necessary for the share to reduce the lag.

Another option would be to move the shared files / folders to the server. That way, you can still maintain control of the share and browsing the contents of the share should be faster for other clients.

Hmm, figures NT would do that. My design machine has the larger drives on it. Oh well, I will have to figure something out.

Other things to do to speed up browsing:

Move the most used protocol to the top of the binding list on both your workstation and the server.

Rearrange the files and folders into separate shares with subdirectories moved to a root folder. Can't really describe this well, but try to reduce the depth of each share's tree of subdirs as much as possible.

If you're using a coaxial network cable, change it for 10 baseT.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for any network cards in the network.
