What burning software are you using?
    What windows are you using?
What is the make and model of your cd burner?
What is the make and model of your computer?
Did the cd burner come with it or was it added later?

In device manager, is there an error code?

it is a hewlett packard model no TS-L462 and I am using it on and windows xp proffesional. I am using nero burner. And I'm not sure whether it came with it or was added later because its not mine and the friend is on holiday. I can't find any cds that might have come with it. Sorry

And in device manager... if you double click on the cd drive you get the properties sheet up... what error code is shown in the lower section?

ok, right click on my computer, select manage. In the lower left, select disk management. It will show your hard disk(s) and any cd/dvd drives you have. If nothing shows up there, then it may be your cd/dvd drive is faulty.

    Is the machine under warranty?

Do you have a cd that is bootable? If so, you can test the drive by setting the computer to boot from CD and see if the cd is working then. If it is, it means that there is a problem with windows. If it does not, it means the CD is faulty and needs replacing.

    hi Littleminx56

Are you able to eject the cd r/w if yes you can check in the BIOS setting that the cd drive is detected or not, if you not able to eject the cdr/w there may be problem may be loose connection of power supply on Cd r/w so check ASAP
