XP: admin account hangs, guest ok.
Have a client who recently attached a USB hard disk to his system and has not been able to enter it since. It boots fine but when the password is entered for the Admin account it just hangs there on the "loading personal settings" screen.
The guest account goes in ok but cannot do anything as it asks for admin logon ... which it wont do.
Any suggestions? (System restore was off also).

If it will login ok when in safe mode, you probably have a corruption in the user profile. Create a new user with admin rights in safe mode and see if that works in normal mode.
It's quite likely that the user installed something or the usb stick was infected and has corrupted the machine.

Ok, done that. Anyway to repair the old profile or do I have to use the new one?

CCT links show you how to transfer the old profile to the new one... repairing the old profile is difficult since you don't know what the problem is...it could be a virus, or something that was on the usb stick that became part of the personal settings.
