If I catch you before you try the repair, or if that doesn't change things, what happens if you go to Customize Desktop in the Desktop Properties, uncheck Internet Explorer Desktop icon, apply that, then re-instate it?

The repair won't run. Because of the fact I ran what turned out to be a botched install of IE 7 ( machine kept crashing), It say I have a newer version installed. Toggling the Desktop Properties doesn't resolve it either.

It's a common problem, IE6 refusing to re-install either because it's already there or now because IE7 is there. You probably need to get IE7 to install properly, try PA Bear's instructions from CCT's google groups link, read thru the IE7 info link even though its title says Vista. Then if you wish, try uninstalling IE7 again, on the basis that good install/uninstall is a way to clear a bad install.

How are you attempting to upgrade to IE7? Are you doing it via Windows Update or did you download the installer? I worked on a PC that was having the same issue via W.U. I downloaded the full install and all went well.

I would also check what add-ins you're runing in IE6. There may be one that IE7 doesn't like.

This happens often lately to me, but only after a ponderous round of updates from MS. After a reboot, the problem usually resolves itself.
