Installing internal DVD writer

I want to replace my DVD reader with a DVD writer. I currently have a CD reader and burner. I purchased a OEM Sony 20x dual layer DVD+RW/-RW.

What the easiest way?

Shut off the computer
Remove the old dvd reader
Make note of what the jumper is set to on the back (Master Slave)
Set the new dvd writer to the same and boot up.

FYI DVD/R/RW drives jumper should be set to master.

Not really nessecary. I have 2 dvd burners and 1 is master and 1 is slave and they both work just fine.
Also is no sense confusing things atm just get it working
He did ask for the "easiest" way

Makes no difference i have used them in all combinations of master/slave
and cdrom/dvdrom/cdrw/dvdrw

FYI DVD/R/RW Do NOT always go as master and CDR/RW's do not always go as slave!

What if the old one was hooked with the hard drive. You gonna go and tell him to use master then?

Doggone, Ferrit, looks like it's your turn to buy the Valtrex this month. Stan, it doesn't matter which drive is master. Ferrit is correct. You just want to be sure the new drive is jumpered the same as the drive you are replacing. Easy replacement. Verify that the data and power cables are securely plugged into the new drive, and that you haven't accidentally unplugged anything else in the process.

Anything from sony is suspect.
Dvd playback on my slave dvd doesn't seem to be a problem so.
I can only assume that the document in question is old (1999) as it doesn't even mention dvdrw's.
Sony is certainly an expert on rootkits.
Of what else they are an expert,who knows
Stan save yourself some trouble and install the dvdrw exactly like the dvdrom you take out and later when you know alot more about jumpers and master drives and slave drives you can configure it how ever you like.

I replaced
dvd reader with Writer . Called Cyberguys who sold me the writer and they said I needed to install software. So I installed Nero 8.0 Trial. Not having any luck burning anything. It is playing DVD's. Don't know enough to trouble shoot. Only have the software for two weeks. Then I have to decide whether I ant to buyit.

Well, Stan, it would be helpful to know which operating system you use for starters. How are you trying to burn discs? If you are using XP you can burn a CD (but not a DVD) directly from Windows. Vista can do both, and Windows 2000 has to have burning software installed.

So, let's say you are using XP and want to burn a file to CD. If you have a blank recordable CD in the drive you could right click the file you want to burn, move the cursor to the "send to" option, choose your burner, click on it, and then follow some simple on-screen instructions to complete the procedure. Windows Help has some more detailed info. But, to repeat, this won't work with a recordable DVD in XP. Windows won't recognize the media correctly.

I'd say, before we try to troubleshoot any Nero related problems, at least try to burn a CD right from Windows, then tell us what happens.
