Realtek alc658 audio chip, Presario S6500nx
I had a virus that required me to use the recovery option that came with my computer. After I reinatalled all items I noticed that I had no sound. I have contacted Realtek and they have not been able to solve the problem. My driver is Realtek AC97 audio for VIA. I hav reinstalled it from both Realtek and Hp with no success. When I go to control panal, sound, volume states no audio device. When I then go to hardware it shows realtek 97 properties, general, says it is working properly, but when I then go to properties and click on the +sign by audio devices, then realtek 97 properties ,the following appears "status: driver is enabled but not functioning properly" Over the past month I have unstalled all and re installed all divers and codecs and alway get this get this status.
Any other thoughts

This site:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...390429&lang=en
has the latest drivers package (10.96 Mb) BUT ALSO has the Spring 2004 Original Audio Driver Collection (25.45 Mb).
Have you tried both? (removing the old stuff first each time)

Did you, after the restore, install the Chipset drivers?

I downloaded from the site and get the following message when I try to install: already in device manager install from there. When I look in the device manager including all the + I can not find, I have reinstalled the following which shows in orginial drivers in the HP restore section of my computer VIA AGP chipset and VIA INF chipset. the results are the same as before.
Thankyou for all the time you are spending on this

OK, boot to safe mode... (batter the f8 key before you see the windows xp startup screen)
Go into control panel add/remove programs and uninstall any realtek or via software shown there
Then go into device manager and remove any AC97 sound devices (do not remove anything else)
Now boot to normal mode and cancel the request from windows to load drivers for the sound.
install these drivers Reboot and then install the sound drivers.
If this is XP, have you done all your windows updates including Service Pack 2? If you haven't you may need to repeat the above having installed service pack 2.

OK - you are up against a wall - do what Noo Noo said again (remove all traces) and try this - FOLLOW the instructions - there is a 3 part download or, I believe, a 1 part;
