Have you tried it with mutated sea bass?

I've seen these in action some 12-13 years ago, only they were beaming at about 1km (0.6 miles).

What about the birds? they are not helicopters to stay in the beam... The system that I saw was mounted on a raised structure on the top of a building with 12 floors.

You live in BC, the land that spawned Greenpeace! You live on Vancouver Island, the birth place of Patrick Moore, the last refuge of eco-hippies, those who wear Cowichan sweaters and Birkenstocks, who use organic peanut butter as hair gel, and who play Scarborough Fair on flutes on street corners! And you think no one will notice when you slice that spotted owl in half with your ethernet light sabre? "Hah!" I say, "Hah!"

But at a kilometre apart, it is entirely possible the bird will fly a distance in the beam, cooking gently as it goes
Seriously, there was a college here who put a wireless point to point across two buildings... the signal was forever dropping out and it was determined that the birds stayed in the path of the beam long enough to ensure that the network dropped completely.

There can be no cooking as the power is very small (a keychain laser has <5mW and can beam as far as 1 mile despite a cheap optical system)
The system that I saw was being used by a bank... I highly doubt it was unreliable.

Well shhhhhhhhhh he was getting in the way of my silence.
The very silence we got from shutting down all those sawmills.
Oh and having a snack in your hair isn't something to be ashamed of.
Especially when its organic.

Well... yah still got the chainsaws.
When is free trade not free trade?
Could it be when one country blocks the export of finished lumber saying the logging practices are unfairly subsidized but eagerly accepts the export of raw logs which provides jobs?
