[RESOLVED] Upgrade install prob to Vista Premium
I am endeavouring to run an upgrade install to MS Vista Premium from XP2 SP2. During the install process, part 3 'Expanding files is reached. Just after the start, possibly 1% or 2%, the install stops advising:-
'windows installation canot continue because a required driver could not be installed'.
There is no further explanation. I have tried 3 times & this error re-occurs.
Has anyone else had this problem & can anyone assist.
Vista has now placed a dual boot option into my PC and left set-up files on my C:. Can these be safely deleted?

Howie, to answer your question, yes you can delete this files if you wish.
The drivers that Vista is after are the SATA drivers or possibly RAID drivers depending on what you have. Installing Vista with more than 3GB ram has never been a problem for me.
If you are using a Vista upgrade disk, you may need the 64bit drivers for SATA/RAID.
If you cannot do a clean install of Vista, I would suggest that you use the XP recovery disks to give yourself a factory preset install of XP and then uninstall all the trial programs and stuff you don't use, reboot and then do the Vista Upgrade with the unzipped/expanded 32/64 bit drivers ready on a usb stick.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

My computer set-up:-
Motherboard - Asus A7N8X Deluxe
1.5 Gb RAM
HD - Maxtor DiamondMax 160GB (SATA)
Using SATA Raid 3112 driver
Graphics - Sapphire X1550 512Mb
Using Vista Premium 32bit Upgrade disk.
I do have an old SCSI PCI Card (SIIG AP-10 SCSI), running my HP 5P scanner.
Don't know if this is causing the problems.
I'm not sure if VISTA supports this, or if there are any workarounds here.
If I need to update any drivers, can you advise please where they can be sourced & if they can be pre-installed into XP first.

Will remove SCSI card. Would this be preventing / stopping the upgrade install?

Quite possibly... it probably recognises it as a scsi card, just can't do anything with it.

Might have been useful to clone your existing OS to a second partition, remove the offending card, THEN upgrade partition 2 to Vista.
Could keep the use of that card by a physical re-install and boot of XP if needed.

Done as suggested. Removed SCSI card & installed Cista on another partition successfully. Reinserted SCSI card, works fine on XP, & denied driver install in Vista. Looks good.
Thanks to all.
