    Gateway effin SUCKS!!!!

okay I've honestly spent over 3 days trying to figure this crap out. I have a Gateway MX6030 notebook laptop. I recently got a virus, so I had to format & reinstall Windows XP (sp2). After the xp format, I downloaded/installed all the drivers for my model from the gateway site. Everything worked fine, but in the device manager "PCI Modem" and "Multimedia Audio Controller" are both in "Other devices" with a yellow question mark & exclamation point next to them. Needless to say, the sound will not work. I've seriously tried everything. Realtek drivers, different chipsets, the conexant driver from the gateway site, even the ATI Integrated Digital Audio Driver. Nothing works and I'm about to throw this fker out the window. PLEASE help anyone that has any insight. Thanks :/

    For audio, try this:

    1. In Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Multimedia Audio Controller, right click 'Update Driver'
    2. Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
    3. Don't search. I will choose the driver to install
    4. Select Manufacturer: Intel and Model: Intel(r) AC'97 Audio Controller
    5. Click Yes and then Finish

For the modem, is this what you downloaded?

    Quote from Gateway:

    "D00267-001-001.exe - Gateway Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller Revision: 4.27.0.0
    Supports: Windows XP
Note: This file contains the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller drivers for Gateway M360, 6000 Series, NX500S, or NX500X notebook computers. If you have a Gateway M360, 6000 Series, NX500S, or NX500X notebook computer and are running Windows XP, install these drivers"

ps: I wasted some time looking for a gateway 'effin' model notebook - don't confuse me like that!

LMAO dude that's awesome , my bad lol. I was chatting with a gateway online customer service guy & he actually took control of my computer and tried to fix it himself. Ends up (just my luck), my model's drivers on the gateway driver site is wrong. So they're sending me a free driver disk in the mail hope it works. Thanks for the help though.

    Welcome to Windrivers amishllama

Fiorst we need to know about what pc you have - is it branded (gateway, compaq, hp, time, etc)? If so what model number is it? And what windows are you running on it?

I have a Gateway MX6030, running XP Pro, that lost the sound after I had to reinstall the operating system. The Connexant Audio Driver on the Gateway website wouldn't work -- until I edited the .inf file and added the Hardware Id for my sound card (that I looked up in Device Manager). Then it worked like a charm. So Gateway appears to have the right driver, just the wrong configuration file.

    Welcome to Windrivers DKS

Thanks for the tip, but I have a few questions...

Exactly what did you edit in the inf file?
Have you checked that the file is still the same on Gateway?
Do you have the link to the Gateway file?

The smbus controller is either a file on it's own or part of the chipset drivers.

Have you been to Gateway? your drivers are all here

The smbus controller might be in with this one since they don't list chipset drivers

Of course you could always use the "scan my pc" option as well.

    thanks for the quick feedback

i already went to gateway's site and tried the audio driver download they have. it did not work so i was wondering if there is an alternate driver somewhere else that i can use. also the download you suggested for the smbus controller did not restore the sm bus controller. any suggestions?
