Post The battle of the NTs

Hi, can someone tell me what the difference is between Windows NT 3.51 and NT 4 Workstation. I have an IBM Thinkpad 755c and currently have windows 95 installed. However, my display only allows me to go to a colour depth of 16 colours. Hence, IBM says that i must have Windows NT 3.51 to take advantage of the 256 colour depth. Is there anyway to raise my colour depth in windows 95 to 256 colours and can i use Windows NT 3.51 drivers in NT 4?

I don't know whether I'm understanding you correctly.

You seem to be asking how to change your colour palette in 95? Yet the question seems to be all about the potential differences between NT 3.5x and 4.0.

Could you make it clearer what you need answered?

Correct me if I am wrong someone...

Wouldn't 95 support a better color depth than NT 3.51? I am sure of it, IBM does not want to answer a question if they said that.

It is better to stick with drivers specifically for NT 4, and not mix it with 3.51, if they did work in 4, I am sure it would screw something up.

TO increase color depth:

RIght click on the desktop and choose properties.
Go to the settings tab.
Increase the color depth.

You may have to update your video driver as well.

Well, yeah...

Two parts to video - what will the card support and what will the monitor support. Last response quite right, this is not about O/S, it's about configuration.

Win 95 supports 1000's of video combinations, you simply need the right display adapter and monitor driver.

At worst, the windows default drivers (Standard LCD monitor I guess for your IBM) and standard vxd should give you at least 256 colours, possibly more.

Check MyComputer>ControlPanel>System>DeviceManager and under display adapter and monitor. Look at properties, you can change drivers there, just follow the instructions

That's AFTER you did the right-click on desktop as previously stated. If that causes a crash (garbled screen) and Windows does not sort for you, you may have to re-boot in safe mode and effect changes

Good luck!

IBM didn't really tell you that...

Did they?

If you're stuck at 16 colors, I'm guessing the display driver is just not installed correctly at the moment. When you get into Device Manager as per instructions in Lowland's post, you'll probly see it as a "Standard VGA Adapter" or something instead of ........Doh! OMG, Western Digital makes/made Video chips!? I went to IBMs website to check on the chipset (couldnt get to driver matrix, dunno if it's a temporary thing) and this is what I found.....

[quote] 1.0 Install ThinkPad 750/755 family SVGA video device drivers
The standard video drivers included in Windows NT only support up to 16 colors. When you need a color depth of more than 16 colors, you must install the Thinkpad Windows NT video drivers. These drivers support the following features:
640x480 256 colors,(LCD mode, CRT mode and LCD/CRT both mode)

800x600 256 colors,(LCD mode and LCD/CRT both mode for 755CX, CRT mode only for the other 750/755 Family)

1024x768 256 colors (CRT mode only)

This video driver diskette supports the following ThinkPads for NT 3.51 only:
- ThinkPad 750C/755C/755CE/755CD/755CDV/755CX which have the Western Digital video controller chip.

If this is the case, IBM mebbe right....at least in so much as there aren't any W9x drivers available for that video chipset....

Mebbe someone else can find something more promising....

Paradise/Western Digital Same same for a while. Strange huh. May have to actually look at the chip for any I.D. numbers on it.
