    Question Sparrow.sys corrupted..help!

Okay, I had spyware/adware.. I did a clean install, everything was fine. Well I downloaded the IM progs I use, apparently one of them had this adware junk embedded. So.. I decided to do a clean install of XP again... Not going so well, normally I can figure things out and fix it myself, but I'm stumped -- I've Googled and Googled -- I find similar problems with no solution! So the problem is.. When I'm trying the clean install it goes for a few mins and then says ''setup cannot continue'' Sparrow.sys is corrupted. So, I've tried over and over -- I know it's not the CD cuz I just did it the day before. Also, system restore does not help. Thanks in advance!!

    Welcome to Windrivers staceluvzdorks

OK, you said clean install, but you have produced a hijackthis log - did you mean a repair install? Did you format the disk?

I think you need to back up the files you need and zerofill the drive as there is still something on the drive that shouldn't be.

No, it wasn't a repair.. I formatted, yes.. That's what I was trying to do again when during setup it said the sparrow.sys file was corrupted, then it reboots.. Endless cycle.. Does the same thing.

Did you have norton go back or any other specialist recovery software or a special partition for recovery?

Stace, sparrow.sys is a file used by some Adaptec drive controllers. There are a couple of possible hardware issues you should look at, and the first thing I would check would be the hard drive. You should download the drive manufacturer's diagnostics and make a bootable CD or floppy and test the drive. The manufacturer's site should have full instructions. Don't bother with the quick test; just run the full or advanced test. I'd also open up the case and check the motherboard for any bulging or leaking capacitors.

When you've run the test, please give us an update, and we can go from there.
