[RESOLVED] RE: Power Supplies

Someone I know is building a computer with the following case, and they asked me to find them a power supply that works for what they have:

Cooler Master CAC-T05-UW
Form Factor: ATX Mid Tower
Compatible Motherboards: ATX, Micro ATX
2 External 5.25" drive bays
1 External 3.5" drive bay
2 Internal 5.25" drive bays
7 expansion slots
USB, Firewire, Audio ports

They are going to build their system around an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with a GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 motherboard.

What type of power supply should I tell them to get?

Well having available spaces and actually putting devices in them is 2 vstly different things.
Maybe if you could detail whats going into all the bays.

According to what they are telling me, they plan to install an optical drive and a SATA hard drive (see specs below).

SATA hard drive specs:
Seagate ST3400620AS
400 GB
7200 RPM
16 MB Cache
SATA 3.0Gb/s interface

That's all the information I can provide right now, given what this person has told me.

Viotech might be ok but I have never heard of it .
I would say with 1 sata drive and 1 optical 450 Antec or enermax or thermaltake will do nicely

Ummm you are sadly mistaken OMGmissinglink
There are PCI-e cards that do not even require a power connector.
And in fact they havent even mentioned a PCI-e card at all, just a sata harddrive and optical drive
I think you should rethink that last statement.

Antec psu output 17a 12v rail might power that PC a few months with an entry level PCI-E graphic card... Viotech does provide extra 12v rail

450W Antec - dual rail 12V. 12V2 = up to 17A 12V1 = up to 15A. Wattage available combining the two Min 250W Max 385W (32A)

Viotec - dual 12V not specified, 36A (430W), no power distribution specified.

the gforce 8600gt requires 12v rail 24a, older gforce hi end gpus requires 12v rail 24 - 32v a, mid level gforce 9600's and above require 12v rail 32a or more.

8600GT rated power consumption = 43W (3.6A). It doesn't even need an auxiliary power connector, as PCIe slot can supply up to 75W. A decent 450W PSU should have no trouble with it unless the rest of the system was very highly specced.

9600 rated power consumption = 95W (8A). A 32A rail would be required if the other system components are consuming 280W just from the 12V.

Let's get an idea of a likely system power consumption, and just for fun we'll throw in a higher consumption card, an 8800GTS (specified at 145W):

Total system power consumption = 300W, less 145W for 8800GTS, rest of system = 155W. Some of that will be supplied by 3.3V and 5V rails, let's guess 115W from 12V, far less than the 280 to need 32A rail.

Note the power consumption of that system with the 8600GT, 226W under load.

1: said PCI-e motherboard is the one suggested by OMG not the consumer
And just for the fun of it
You should know OMGmissinglink I ran 4 80 gig sata's 2 optical drives and a pair of X2600XT's off of an Enermax 485 for longer then 6 months so what your saying is truly foolishness about them not supplying enough power.
