    Post Strange Extension In Profiles

When I view the different profiles on my NT 4.0 box to determine who has been logging on, I see the normal profiles and several duplicates with the extension ".000" For example, I have "Administrator" and "Administrator.000" directly below it. I also have another individual's profile listed with this same extension. I also have Admin rights and was wondering if these profiles could be deleted safely.

On another note, when some users log on for the first time, it may take 10 minutes or longer for the desktop to appear after the logon screen while establishing their profile for the first time. Is there any way to shorten this time on the first logon? The box has SP 6.0, 64 MB RAM, and a 90 MHz CPU.

    Thanks for the help,

    Jeff

Can't say for sure, but perhaps the user has been removed then readded. Perhaps it was caused by a reinstallation. I would however not delete them from the explorer window.

Look in the system properties under the advanced tab, there should be a choice for user profiles. I would remove them from that location, but remember the golden rule :

If it ain't broke, don't fix it

Thanks for the help! That's twice you've helped me this week. The other time was in "Tech-to Tech" where my system would not power up after replacing the PSU, CPU, and MB.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!

This can also happen in a domain where there is a conflict between a local log on account and a domain account, when the profiles are not roaming

This is usually because the User Name is the same for the domain and local machine, but the password is different. In an attempt to resolve this, the system will put a unique identifier on the end, so that it will identify the correct SID in the database.

Often your files will look like this: (in profiles or documents and settings depending on the O/S

    Joebloggs.domainname
    Joebloggs.partofdmainname~1.ooo

Accounts identify as local don't have the domain, so you can have and admin account for local and domain on a machine

    Administrator.domain
    Administrator

    Hope this helps clarify

    Good luck!
