Backup Files/New recovery cd
Thx so much for the expedient reply about my problem with an MXIshell icon left on my desktop after a registery scan left it there. I did indeed just have to delete it and there were no problems with my pc after that. I have aanother query for you. My backup files are bloated and contain files dated way before I even got the pc which a warranty replacement form TigerDirect.
I would like to delete all those files if possible and make a fresh backup file with a new restore cd for it. My OS is WinXP sp3 but from what I have read, it is not possible to do this....... Or is it?

I think you are confusing various things...
When you say backup files, are you talking abou the ones held by system restore?
What are the backup file names?
Did tiger direct supply you with a restore cd?

AVG 8.0 is free but if you're arleady infected with a virus the installation probably is not going to work as virii generally disable any virus scans and their installers once they get rooted in deep enough. As far as a "free recovery disk" You'll have to rely on finding the original, or order one from the manufacturer of the PC. If you're very lucky you may know a tech who will do your recovery for you with your license key as long as you have one. If you have no license key you're going to be hard pressed to get any help.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

If you have a Gateway Laptop you should have a windows licence on the label on the bottom. Also you can order media from Gateway (depending on the age of the laptop). Most Laptops have a restore partition and the user manual will tell you how to use that to set the laptop back to factory condition (which will also get rid of the virus)... but if you have documents or pictures on it, you will need to copy those off as the factory default will delete any data you have created.
Click here to go to Gateway support so you can download drivers and manuals.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

To address your first question, there are a couple of ways to scan an infected system for free, and a couple of decent free AV solutions. So, let's start with scanning and removal. My suggestion would be to go to Eset.com and download a trial version of NOD32 then install and run it. There are definitely lots of ways that malware can block access to AV websites and interfere with running AV software, but let's just take it a step at a time. Try NOD32 and let's see what happens. After that, we can look at other options.
