    Sounds like some file damage.
Best thing is to run a
    chkdsk /r

    Very good tutorial here.

nbabe, it would be helpful if you quoted the error message, but the most common cause and the fix can be found here. This can happen if defrag is damaged or missing.

So, what else has been going on with your computer, and what kind of fixes have you tried?

Well, it wouldnt boot. After several unplugging replugging removing battery, removing video card(cause someone told me it might be taht) it restarted, but since then when it starts sometimes it doesnt completed the start up. What I mean is tahtthis computer had 3 log on. and it would never get to it(when the start up doesnt finishes) I would have to unplug replug open close a few times until it works all the way to it. those are the symptoms so far...

ok the exact message is disk defragmenter could not start,

Tried that checkdisk run and when the computer restarted it flashed for a brief moment a message and then continue to boot. all I ccould read was this computer has or hasnt RAW ...whatever something like that it was there for a second or two but it mentionned something about RAW files... hope that helps.

    Thumbs down

used the xp dvd from gateway. It doesnt work. I pressed R for recovery at the beginning and it will only allow me to FULLY reinstall Xp.This is not at all what the steps on ur tutorial had. In fact I never got to that cmd page. Therefore I still cannot run checkdisk and defrag still doesnt want to run and when i start the computer as mentionned previously I always get that error message that tells me I got raw files and that autocheckcannot run on raw files...then is keeps on booting till my 3 log on...how can I at least for now get rid of that message at the beginning.

Then any other ideas to fix defrag?...what about in safe mode? would that work and if so how do we getin safe mode. I had ME edition before so with this Xp computer im not too at ease. thanks

ok i tried to run safe mode which i learned is f8 ...it offered me windows or xp..tried xp and it told me it had a problem. then i restarted the computer again in safe mode and tried the second option windows(default) and all it did was to bring to a black page with safe mode written on it and nothing else...there was nothing i could click or see or do...had to closed it manually. so im still stuck with that message of autocheck cannot run on raw files and defrag still won work

Safe mode you can get to 3 ways
    1. batter the f8 key before you see the windows screen
    2. start, run, msconfig click on the boot tab and check the box (remember to uncheck it when you are done)
    3. turn the machine off half way through booting and next time you turn it on, it will moan it couldn't start correctly and offer you safe mode.

You could always download a 3rd party defragger...

yeah i did that. the f8 thingy.
but it did not give me a page just a black screen with nothing to do on it.once u click f8 i had to choose safemode which i did the nit offered me xp or windows(default) tried both with not success.

Right now Id be happy if I could get rid of that friggin message of autocheck cannot perform on raw files which happened after I tried what Feret told me to do in cmd. since it would nt perform the ckdsk then I guess this mesage always appears. If at least I could get rid of it then that be one problem less

Why are you running chkdsk on an unformatted hard drive? Or is it on a usb flash drive?

You need to back up your data right now.
How big is the hard drive and how much free space?
