XP PRO SP1 - no upgrade to SP2 or SP3
Hello folks - this machine seems to be spyware/virus clean. XP Pro with SP1 installed. Very few processes running at startup. It will not install SP2 or SP3. After a while (most of the installation seems to go fine), It gives a small window saying that the installation was cancelled. I have tried:
Installing both in safe mode.
Repair install of XP Pro.
Neither of these has helped.
Any suggestions? I can provide more info if needed.

Are you doing it through windows update or downloading the entire sp2 pack and installing that? Do you have IE7 installed?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

"Are you doing it through windows update or downloading the entire sp2 pack and installing that? Do you have IE7 installed?"
I have tried it both ways. Get the same thing in both cases.
As for IE7 - this is strange. When I open IE, it gives me the initial IE7 screen where you can select your search thingie, turn on phishing, cleartext, etc... When I go to save the settings, it fails. Under IE help menu, it still shows IE 6.something.
Sorry - I'm not near the machine to provide word for word messages.
As far as other updates - this is a problem also. It has like 29 updates to download and install. If I let it do them all, they all fail. However, I can select 2 or 3 or 4 at a time and it will go ahead and install them. This does not work for the last few, for some reason.
pretty strange, huh?

Right, sounds like you have ie7 files mixed up... since this is XP, do a repair install, that's probably the quickest way to sort the files out. Then install SP3 from the full download directly after install, do not do any other updates.

NooNoo, I tried exactly what you said - repair install, then reinstalling from the download. I get the same error message still - "service pack 3 setup cancelled"
This is really frustrating....

In services.msc, make sure automatic updates is not disabled. Set it to automatic and start the service. Also, make sure Background and intelligent transfer Service is not disabled. It should be set to manual. Start it and try the update again. If it fails again, use Malwarebytes to scan your system.

Those services are correct in their settings. I am still getting the cancelled message.

jabbwk did you install any antivirus or firewall or antispyware? If so, those should be disabled during sp3 installation and the computer NOT connected to the internet.

The above talks about some updates that need to uninstalled before starting the sp3 install or it will fail with that error.

If all else fails you could always just create a new Windows XP disc with SP3 slipstreamed in. Once you create it, simply format/reinstall. Click the link below to see how to do this. There's a lot of steps but it's pretty easy overall.

This discusses the same scenario and points to a possibility of having changed the location of the program files or an invalid entry in a registry key.

Thanks for the post. I followed your link - it mentions checking the location of the "program files" folder in the registry. Mine is correct, at c:\program files
Any other suggestions?

4.875: Failed To Enable SE_SHUTDOWN_PRIVILEGE Would imply that something is blocking the update - firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.
Did you try the repair install method I proposed?

won't install service pack 2 on Windows xp.
Just a thought, but when the service pack 1 came around there was a crack to install Windows XP and service pack 1. Service Pack 2 wouldn't install on that combination. I don't know or care if there was a crack to install service pack 2, and I wouldn't make it public if I did know. If that is the case then the only way is to install a legal copy of Windows XP and install the service Pack 2.
