This is a link to the driver file you likely need.

Also is the speaker still in the lower right corner beside the clock?

    Welcome to Windrivers rigadigg

here are the 64bit drivers just in case.

I notice you had a previous crash with direct show... have you updated the video drivers?

If the sound just apparently quit working, it is possible that the sound output device got changed and needs changing back.

hi, thankyou for the quick response. I tried both links and this did not solve the problem. despite speakers being plugged in (built into monitor) control panel>sound shows 'speakers not plugged in' and so has changed default device to 'realtek digital output' and no sound plays. i have also tried external speakers to no avail and a sound test either way reports 'failed to play test tone'. typically i have also misplaced the disk that came with my computer.

Right, so what sort of speakers have you got plugged in? They should be powered... can you test them on something else like an mp3 player?

The fact that the speaker is not detected could mean a dodgy socket, jack or dead speakers.

According to HP that is a desktop machine and has no internal speakers... so could you explain what you meant by external speakers?

uhhh duh, helps if I read what you said about the monitor speakers...

The monitor speakers can be turned off at the monitor and some monitors have analogue or HD modes - you need to check this... so what model monitor do you have and how are you connecting the monitor speakers?

when i got the computer a year ago i was using the w1907 19" that came with it, with audio supplied from the soundcard to the moitor via the double ended jack that also came with the computer. now i have the comp hooked upto a samsung tv with the same jack from before into the 'pc audio in' of the tele which also worked fine before. it seems to be since the speaker tab dissapeared completeley from realteks audio manager but i will check out the troubshoot from HP. thankyou

The add to the troubleshooting list to roll back the driver... possibly got a windows update one and sometimes they reset things they shouldn't.

My speaker icon is not on the bottom right hand corner!

I think accidentally uninstalled my sound card, I get the message that there is no active sound mixer device as i try to check on my sound volume settings.
    What can i do?

    I have a Dell Dimension 3000
    256 mB
Processor: Intel Celeron (R) CPU 2.40 ghz

Welcome to Windrivers Eto. Usually we ask you to post a new thread since your problem is different... but since you only need to reinstall the audio driver from here it shouldn't be a problem. If the reinstall doesn't work, please create your own thread and post again.
