But until you get the 500gb SATA recognised in bios, nothing can happen... or is it recognised now?

When you press f6 nothing happens for a little while... then it offers you drivers or requests the floppy disk.

    Exactly what is happening?

Maybe a stupid question, but anyway: where in the BIOS can I find if the SATA drive is recognised?
What I meant with the F6 not working: when Windows is installing you get directly the message 'Press F6 if you want to install etc'. If I press F6 then nothing happens, it just starts copying files.

After you press f6 the install starts..then later when it needs the file it will ask you to insert a floppy with the file on it..nothing is supposed to happen when you first press f6

geoscomp you are right, the drivers are asked for later. After copying all the files (and the drivers) Windows is starting and then again: no hard disk

If you check Bios the Main screen gives you a number of options:

Select the Integrated Peripherals and make sure Sata IDE Controller is set Enabled.

edit: images from the MSI manual which doesn't tell you what the Bios defaults are like a good manual should

The Sata IDE Controller is indeed enabled.

I'd rather one of these pro's handled this and I have a killer cold, so my last thing to say is that you updated your Bios and that resets everything in there and so, not knowing what the defaults are, it is hard to do an on-line guide-through.

There are folks here that are GREAT with this stuff - hang in there!

ps: did you disconnect the IDE while you tried this install?

The first menu page usually - where the date and time is setup - if it has found the drive, it will be listed there.

CCT makes a good point... you did disconnect the IDE drive first?

At some point it asks you which drivers... the drivers should be on the floppy and NOT inside any folder. Quite often the manufacturers made the disk for you and helpfully put the drivers inside a folder, which XP doesn't see. XP should ask you if you want to use a driver from the floppy or the native driver (if it has one). Make sure you don't just cancel out of the sequence (easily done) but continue - this tutorial not for your board but shows the steps.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
