no, service pack 2 is better! so that's not the problem.

Please delete the unknown device that you think is ethernet controller (lan card) and restart the machine, when the hardware wizard launches, browse it to the lan folder again and see if it finds what it wants then.

Found the intel all in one driver here click the download word in blue part way down on the right, then scroll down through the terms and click accept then click on Network Adapter Drivers for Windows* 2000, Windows* XP, and Windows Server* 2003 and then click the little blue bar at the top to download and then save where you can find it easily on your machine. Once downloaded, double click the file and follow the wizard.

Right... then you are not using the onboard lan that came with the machine - the onboard lan socket is usually just above the back usb ports on the upper half of the machine... is that where it's plugged in?

Either way try this via driver (Thanks CCT) and see if that solves the problem. If it is plugged in over the usb ports, then it's possible that compaq/hp have just posted the wrong specifications and drivers.

heheh so does CCT.... thing is, it is very rare for hp to post the wrong driver, so I am more likely to believe what HP says.

Would you please look at where the ethernet cable plugs into the back of your computer and post where it is? You might have the onboard one just turned off and are using a separate card.

Fair enough, I reported the wrong driver to hp on their feedback for the download.
