Read write access problem

Windows Vista Premium. AMD 64 5000, 2.0Gb DDR2, Hitachi 400Gb.

Every time the PC boots, it blue screens with the error code 0x000000BE, and the error message "An attempt was made to write to read only memory".

It does this is normal mode, safe mode, and system repair.
Have tested memory, HDD, mobo etc and all are OK. In fact, an installation onto a new HDD went fine with the same hardware.
I have removed the HDD and scanned for viruses etc.

I cannot seem to get round this issue at all. Any ideas?

If this were XP, I would replace the usual files (default, sam, security, software and system) from a restore snapshot. Is there a similar method for Vista?

That's a rare code but the definition is "A faulty driver or service is typically responsible for this error, as is outdated firmware. If the name of a file or service is specified, try uninstalling the software (or rolling back the driver if it’s an upgrade)."

I have tried repair install, last known good config etc, but same blue screen no matter what is done.

As it wont boot, I cannot upgrade or roll back drivers.

A reinstall is not really something I want to do. The customer needs it back working, as it has certain software installed for which he has no discs.

Here's a thought, for good or ill.

Can you make a disk image of that hard drive?

If so, and it is the disk cache that is 'bad', you might be able to use the image.

Forgat to mention that earlier. The drive will not clone, and I have tried three different programs. Ghost comes up with an unspecified error has occured!

This is a bit of a long shot but.... could it possibly be a failing circuit board on the drive? If you have the exact same model drive in stock try replacing the board and see what you get. That or a bad cable but I doubt that as much.

Thanks, but this is a software issue. The hard drive has already passed the Hitachi extended test.
