Wireless router info
Is there a wireless router that can be switched on and off?, what I am saying is I want a router which I use all time wired ports, but the wireless very infrequently, this would also be of benefit to people with kids, meaning you could turn wireless off at a certain time of night and continue using wired ports with main pc.

It's pretty easy if you have wired - you can go into the router and turn off the wireless part in many routers... I suppose you want to know which one...? Well what router do you have? It may be you can do it without getting a new one.
If not, get a separate wireless access point you can just unplug when you don't want it on and a router without wireless.

I have a netgear RP114 which isnt wireless, I only want an occasional wireless connection when my kids are round with their laptops etc, but want to be able to turn it off when not in use, which is 90% off the time,

Many routers allow you to configure access to specific users (via Mac address) and also allow you to set access time periods.
On mine I could set up access for Mon-Thurs night 7PM-9PM and on Friday 7PM-11PM and say 9 AM-9PM Saturday and 9AM-7PM Sunday (all different rules but once set that's that).
The use of a Mac address filter helps prevent theft of the router internet link.
I think I got all that correct. I presently use the Mac filter.

Right, may I recommend something that I have - it also connects psps and ds's as well!
Wireless Access Point I note that some people have problems with it - most notably when reading the manual...
From personal experience it has good coverage even when shoved under a desk in my sons room!
You just plug this into your wired router via ethernet cable, plug in the mains and configure.

This is the unit I got; http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/661/868...archtype=genre
25 pounds more than the adapter, BUT you have a second router for that 25 pounds and can program access restrictions from your own computer.
Just a thought anyway.

CCT, as far as I can see, it prevents internet access, it doesn't actually turn off the wireless beacon...

Thanks, its looks a nice unit, I cant understand why the big names arnt putting a switch on these units, so when the kids go to bed etc, you can just flick a switch, most peple cant configure the access unless they are advanced users, but I got lots to consider, cheers.

Because usually it's the adults that hog the wireless at night
