In Device Manager under the USB list, right click on the device and click 'update driver' and let Windows look (online also).

    Any change?

No! Then right click on it again and uninstall it.

    Then, disconnect it.

Then reboot and go into Disk Management again.

    Then connect it again.

Your computer is seeing that as an unformatted new (RAW) drive. If there is stuff on it you want to keep, copy it off using another comp.

You will then have to reformat it on your comp.

    That's what I think.

Let's get Noo Noo's opinion before you do it.

Well, there are a few other things you can try:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920875/

    http://www.ntcompatible.com/Desperat...ed_t32356.html

You might also try using SFC \scannow; http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43051.html

A last ditch possibility is to log on as an Administrator, disconnect ALL USB devices except keyboard/mouse, set Show Hidden Files ON in Windows Explorer, then navigate to c:\Windows\inf folder and locate and delete infcache.1 file and then reboot.

This forces Windows to reintegrate all the inf data for device drivers at boot.

If you are booting with the external connected, don't.

Try with it disconnected - get the error then?

You need to leave it disconnected, try a fix, connect it to check, and if it isn't fixed, disconnect it again each time.

Gotta reboot the comp after each 'fix' also.

IF that disk was working say three weeks ago, you might have a System Restore Point that would set things right.\

Last 2 things after all the other fixes I suggested and the one above are a Repair Install and, of course, a Full Clean Re-install.

    gl to you

I have been trying to remember the last one of these we got... turned out the machine was heavily infected... this might be the problem

Please download hijackthis from here and post the report (note you may have to use more than one post to post the entire report.)

That has got to be the shortest hijack log I have ever seen!

It makes me think you definitely have something. Have you run a thorough scan with MalwareBytes.org antimalware?
