    APC has screws loose

    Literally!

I was doing an install a few months ago and was putting together the rack.

Time to install the APC battery backup (those fuggers are heavy!). I take out the battery and then mount the casing with the crews that APC sent with the battery backup. They seem light but they should know what it needs, right? The case is mounted to the rack.

Take the battery, slide it in, connect it, screw it in and put the faceplate on.

    Done with that, right?

I go and get the router, slide that in on rack and start screwing it in. top left, top right then SNAP

Uh-oh, then the unthinkable happens. The battery DROPS from the rack - luckily my ninja reflexes (and the ninja reflexes from the guy from Siemens installing the security system) allow us to catch it before it comes crashing down onto the floor - and my feet.

He's holding it and I quickly rip off the faceplate and take the battery out.

What happened? APC gave us ALUMINUM screws to mount a battery backup that weighs close to 50 pounds (maybe more?). How stupid are they or is their bottom line more important than the physical stability of the racks their equipment goes in and the feet of anyone who is working on it?

If they didn't give you aluminum screws how else are they to convince you to buy a replacement unit sooner?

I say you write a nasty letter and call into question their collective ancestry.

I let my boss know and she passed it up - it probably got lost somewhere in corporate email and red tape.
