Sorry it's been a while since I looked in. Has any progress been made?
Given that the original cd also has a problem it might imply there is a hardware fault. Have you tried uninstalling all sound drivers from add/remove programs and then turning the sound off in bios/setup, rebooting a few times so that windows gets the idea that sound is no longer there, then reinstalling?
