The ess file is a system file for the samsung player
Sandisk have their own system for running stuff.

autorun.inf is a systemfile - but it gets hijacked, so the thing to do is get rid of the suspect (or all) autoruns and then recreate a clean one.

Thats what i figured, It seems to have its own autorun ... and the question is how do i access it if it has no drive name? It says Sansa m250 and it shows a little mp3 player. And when autorun is gone how would i make a new autorun file? do i have to make a new one for windows too? and if so how do enable autorun when its fixed? Also I ran it in safe mode again to check each device and still I get "File not found - autorun.inf" so all i have to do is find a way to search for the sandisk player's autorun files . Sorry 4 all the questions and info its all i got at this point LOL. Thanx 4 your help so far im learning a lot

OK so it sounds like you have killed all the autoruns (or your virus checker did)

Now do your usb sticks autorun normally?

No unfortunately, the only one that is is the sandisk sansa mp3...... i'm guessing the autorun files were erased but i could be wrong. Either that or my autorun is disabled but that evidence doesn't match due to autorun working on the mp3 or it could be autoplay, It must be enabled but not autorun I suppose.

OK autoplay uses autorun to get it's instructions on what to do. This is why autorun is a virus problem because it changes it to run virus files.

So now you need a blank autorun file (or one that does what you want)

To make a blank autorun file open notepad

    Type in

    [autorun]

now save the file as type *.* (or it will put .txt on the end of the file)
    and save the filename as

    autorun.inf

Now if autoplay is working, it will ask you what you want to do with the content.

ok i made the autorun file and saved it as autorun.inf but what do you mean by save the file as type *.* that type doesnt exist only Text Documents (*.txt) and All Files. Now it dont ask me what to do with the content (content of i dont know what) When i go to properties it says Type of file: Setup information Opens with: Notepad. It looks like a dud to me. I mean it looks like an autorun file so i dont know........I guess autoplay isn't working either. Do i have to put it somewhere specific or do i just leave it on the desktop? Put it in my device? Im confused. This website signs me out before i could type its killing me

I'm in the UK, it's tea time here..

I meant type all files... sorry about that

You need to just rename the file to
    autorun.inf

And it needs to be on the usb device.

No not at all...... blank cds, music cds, dvds, usb devices all dont autoplay. It worked when i first installed windows, until the virus came along. And believe it or not I just repaired my installation of windows xp from my cd and it still happens. Wouldn't it renew autorun/autoplay as well as the whole system?

Dave, a repair installation fixes many Windows problems, but by design it doesn't overwrite a lot of system files and personalized settings. If it did, you'd need to reload all of your software, etc., so some Windows problems won't be resolved by repair installation. You should still run the repair tool Noo suggested.
