Cant connect to the internet

My laptop will let me connect to the internet at airports and also at coffee bean and other free hifi hotspots, but when I am at my girlfriends house who has internet connection, I am unable to jump onto her network, even though I can see her network and I have all the correct passwords. My laptop simply says it does not regognise the ip adress


Any help please??

More info, when I switch on the connection manager it shows all available networks, including my girlfriends, I then click to connect and it says connectiing........then says obtaining ip adress.......then finally says....we cannot connect you to your chosen wifi hotspot....you may be too far away (even in the same room) you may have entered wrong security key (but I know thats not the case)

She has just bought a new laptop today, and can connect to her home network, but my laptop (only 3 months old) simply wont connect even when sat side by side

If XP, have you tried the wireless wizard?

Lots more info about your hardware would be really helpful as well. Things like brand of laptop, wireless NIC, etc. and what connection manager your laptop uses. What authentication method does the router require, and so on.

Remove all connections in the Advanced wireless area on the laptop re start and then try to connect
Also remove the security on the router till you get the connection working again

Thus, if she uses Mac filtering, she hasn't told/shown him and this leads me to suspect it isn't Mac filtering.

Or there is an AWFUL conspiracy.

perhaps its faulty hardware, or incompatibilities between the two computers. has the poster tried an ethernet cord to see if its the router?

I would suggest removing any networks listed that show her SSID If at one point you tried to connect and inadvertently input the wrong key if that network is in the list it will try to use the wrong credentials.
