Svchost.exe using 100% of my computer memory

I have a problem with my computer running slow and freezing up. I am using windows xp and firefox. I open firefox and sometimes i can't even get my homepage to open up. When it opens up i try to go to a site it freezes up for a second and it does this everytime i do something on the internet like scroll down or up, type something or try to go to a site it freezes up. I seen on task manger that svchost.exe using 100% of my computer.
I tried windows uopdate agent 3.0 x86 for windows xp and its says already installed.
I tried windows xp kb927891.exe and it says service pack version is newer than the update you are applying no need to update.

Do you think that is my problem and how do i stop it I know I can't delete it so how do I stop it from using 100% of my computer?

    Its most likely viral.
As in you have a virus/trojan or some other infection.
    What antivirus are you using?
I am not too sure what windows update agent is but,
If you click the Start button, Then click Programs you should
see Windows Update right at the top. Use that to update.
If you have trouble finding it that way.
Go to Internet Explorer, then under Tools Is Windows Update

While I have never used Firefox, I imagine it allows you do disable add-ons.

Do so - ALL of them.

    Any change?

I already tried windows update and that didn't help. I already did a virus scan AVP 2009 spyware doctor and spybot and not help. Svchost.exe still using 100%

I wouldn't say viral just yet.

Here is what I would try first.

    Download and install this:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Reboot after install and post feedback.

Of course you want this file: "WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe" There is more than one to download make sure you select the file I mentioned for the version of your operating system.

    Thanks

What software specifically is this please? The only things I'm aware of answering to AVP 2009 are malware (fake antivirus):

    AntiVirus Pro 2009:

    Or AntiVirus PC 2009:

If your using AVP 2009 then you are using a fake antivirus I think.
It likely is the reason you are running 100%.
    2 things
Download Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org) left side free
    Download Microsoft Security Essentials
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Make sure that you update them completely and do a "FULL SCAN" with both of them

    Okay

    Try this...

    Start Menu > Run
    type: services.msc
    (& press okay)

Disable the service Automatic updates & Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Reboot the computer & tell me if it corrected the problem.

To disable the service select the service from the list and select properties. Then General Tab. Set start-up type to disable. Also select stop. See if that fixes it let me know results.

I disabled Automatic updates & Background Intelligent Transfer Service and rebooted my computer. Svchost.exe is still at 100%. I don't know what else to do. I done tired everything I can think of. Do u think doing a system restore will solve my problem or do u know anything else i can try without having to do a system restore?

Well... I'd maybe try running some anti-spyware and antivirus software on your computer.

I recommend - Combofix, Malwarebytes for Anti-Spyware and for AntiVirus NOD32.

Best to run your scans in safemode. I've seen a corrupt windows installer as well as automatic update service get carried away using 100 percent of the CPU before... in this case i think its more likely some type of rogue infection. I wouldn't waste my time with a system restore. Start doing file system scans.

You can check for things that start in addition to Windows.

    Be off-line (off the internet).

Click start, run, type msconfig and press enter.

Look under Startup - uncheck EVERTHING!

Look under Services, check the box to Hide All MS Services, and again, uncheck EVERYTHING left.

    Reboot.

Is the svchost running high cpu still?
