Could also be the flourecent lamp in there that is bad instead of the inverter. Sometimes they called backlights I think.

Well I got it working good on a monitor now! I removed the presentation director, and set the video properties to monitor. It goes to monitor every time I restart it. I removed about 10 programs and received and installed 28 upgrades. I am going to keep cleaning it up and remove Norton and switch to AVG free. one thing that is bugging me is it goes to a log on screen after 10 minuets and I haven't been able to stop this even after googing it many times.I will continue to try and figure out what part is bad and see if I can fix it,if the cost of the part isn't more that the laptop is worth....Don

I would look at the screen saver settings might see a little check box that says something about require users to press cntrl alt del or on resume display logon or welcome screen clear that check mark and at least one of your issues may clear up.

Today I unfastened the LCD screen and got the part no. which is 42T0317, also I checked the cables and they looked great. The LCD screen had a repaired 08/04 tag on it. I am wondering if maybe something is wrong with this machines motherboard.,maybe a crack ,bad resistor or maybe a failed transistor.Does anyone know if the signal that goes to a monitor is the one and same signal that goes to the LCD screen. Also There is a red and white cable that goes to the top of the screen to what I think is a back light this cable comes out of one end of the inverter card. There's no back light in it I think it is missing from when IBM repaired this PC the second time???.....Don

Sorry I am not familar with the power circuit. I am a bit confused are you saying there is no backlight in your unit because someone forgot to put it in after the last repair? Did the LCD work when you first got it? Does it sometimes display a few colors only very faintly? If so my guess is that the backlight is in there and that it has gone bad. Maybe you can find a whole new LCD and case for that make and model on ebay??? I have purchased them before and just swapped out the screens in them because the flourecent lamps are delicate and kind of a pain to replace for a big oaf like me :P

This was my wifes PC, she doesent remember any light.
There is no back light bulb it it. (neon tube??) I can't find a back light in the parts list or digram. Just 2 empty brackets at the top of the LCD. So I guess that it doesn't need one??? ...Don

I think sometimes they are called the flourecent lamp and they are usually a part of the backlighting for the lcd screen and a part of the inverter circuit.

Right nunob two wires one red, one white come out off the right end of the inverter board and go to the brackets on the top side of the screen. I found a brand new screen on Ebay for $64 delivered so I am waiting for it to arrive and I will see if that gives me a screen....Don

Sweet news Don!!! I hope the new screen resolves your issue I suspect it will. And if not you can take it apart and see if the backlight or flourecent lamp is missing then order up a new one. Time to add laptop repair to your resume
