New Build - No Post

Ok I just got my parts today and thought I got everything compatible but the computer will not post or show video. The fans spin and the motherboard lights up.

Here are the specs
ASUS M4A79T Deluxe (not sure of the BIOS Version but it is brand new so I would hope that it is recent)
AMD Phenom II 965 125W
OCZ Platinum OCZ3P1333LV4GK 2GB Memory Chips (4 of them in all slots 8GB total)
XFX Radeon 5770 w/6pin PCI-E power connector PCIe-2.0
I also have these componants installed but that should not have anything to do with the issue
Antec 850W PSU
WD Raptor 300GB 10,000RPM HDD
LiteOn-Blu-Ray Drive
ASUS DVD-RW

I have all the power plugged in and I am using the 8 pin EATX12V power connector

The only thing I can think of is that the ram is listed at 1.65V and the motherboard says 1.7V for the similar OCZ chips. I am not sure why that would make a huge difference.

I read on another forum that you can tell your BIOS revision by your serial number and specifically the last 4 digits well my serial number is 9CM0AC421271 and looking at the available BIOS revisions that does not match any of them.

I cannot imagine why it wouldn't post and according to the BIOS list it supports the 125W Phenom 965 at level 2002 which came out back in september.

I am an experienced builder and for the life of me I cannot see if any of the parts I chose to build with would be incompatible.

You've confiemed the psu is set for 120 V?

Tried one stick of ram alternately to check all 4?

Voltage tested the psu outputs?

Yes the dip switch in the back of the PSU is set for 115V

Yes I tried 1 stick of ram in each of the DIMM slots and repeated for each stick of ram.

I did not test the voltage of the PSU but do have a PSU voltage tester at work which I will borrow

I also need to snag a speaker lead that connect to the motherboard to see if there are any beep codes. I thought there was one on the board but there is not and the case did not include one.

Guy here says there should be a 'bios label' and that 'if their BIOS wasn't 0902 or later it wouldn't recognize the newer processors and wouldn't boot.'

Thanks I will have to look more closely for that information. There are like 4 stickers on the board and it was late and I was frustrated so I could have overlooked it.

Ok I got this solved...it turned out to be the processor. I brought the computer to a local PC build/repair shop and was able to "geek" talk the owner into letting me borrow a AM3 CPU to test in there and the machine booted. We closely examined the processor and the pins were not bent but it looked like a manufacturing defect because some of them looked like they were melted and deformed. Its hard to explain but it kind of looked like a bad solder job. He did me a favor and took that processor and submitted it for an RMA and actually exchanged it for another Phenom 2 965. I did not expect that but he said he could not let a fellow geek wait for NewEgg or AMD to RMA it and said with his systems builder "status" (that's what he called it) he could get the RMA over nighted. So I got a replacement CPU and all is good. This is a first for me to have a DOA CPU.

AMD would have RMA'ed it very quickly with their direct rma.
Would have liked to see a picture of that. In 12 years,
I have never had any bad cpu's from Amd especially the PIB 's.

I was going to go that route but when the Shop owner offered a instant exchange so I could get up and running over the weekend I could not pass it up. The processor he gave me was still factory sealed so how could I say no.

As far as the defective processor goes we actually had to look under a magnifying glass. Looking at it with the processor with just my eyes I could not see much.

here is my suggestions:
1. try to remove other components like video card, HDD etc.
2. power up your computer with on CPU on it. you should get RAM error beep
3. put one of your RAM, if its OK then put another one and so on.
4. then PUT your video card as it will sound video error beeps
5. then try other components one at a time

with this we are trying to isolate where the error is coming.

Thanks for the suggestions but it turned out to be the processor and I had that replaced.
