I am using windows xp on a hp d530, and I am having trouble installing sp3, how can I boot this system into safe mode? I may have better luck installing the upgrade this way. I am getting the error message "Thefile c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open. I would appreciate the help.

Intel Mod
Have you scanned thoroughly for malware? atapi.sys is a known malware hide, and the malware can be protecting itself from being overwritten.

Download HijackThis;

then run it and then copy the log and paste it at the following site for an automated analysis;

Anything they say is critical, you can tell us about and maybe we can help.
